Dr. Hugh W. Coleman

Dr. Hugh W. Coleman passed away in 2018. He was Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and had experience at Sandia National Laboratory and NASA. He was a former Giles Distinguished Professor at Mississippi State University and held the Eminent Scholar Chair in Propulsion at UAH for two terms (1991-2001). He was the founding chair of the ASME V&V 20 Committee “Verification and Validation in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer” and served as chair of the ASME Fluids Engineering Division, the Fluid Mechanics Technical Committee, and as an Associate Technical Editor of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering and of the ASME Journal of Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification. He also served as a member of the NATO/AGARD working group and AIAA GTTC standards subcommittee that produced AIAA Standard S-071A-1999 “Assessment of Experimental Uncertainty with Application to Wind Tunnel Testing” and as a member of the ASME V&V Standards Committee, which oversees the development of ASME standards and other documents dealing with verification and validation in all areas of engineering. He was a Fellow of ASME and an Associate Fellow of AIAA.
